6 Ways to Save on Gas Costs

Gas is expensive. There's no sugar coating it. While you can't control how much you pay, you can make that gas last longer. There are tricks to make that gas stretch, or reward programs that can save you money.

Here are some tips to help you save on gas.

Use a rewards program

Rack up the rewards points, but make sure you’re actually coming out ahead by knowing the terms and conditions before signing up. Wherever you regularly pump gas, ask the employees what kind of program their company offers. If they don't offer a rewards program, maybe it's time to look for another main gas station.

Check your tire pressure

According to the US Department of Energy, well-inflated tires can save you 15 cents a gallon. If you look on the side of your tire, it should have the recommended inflation specs. If they aren't there, refer to the manufacturer's manual.

Use a gas-tracking app

Use an app like GasBuddy, Upside or Waze to help you find the lowest-priced gas in your area or along the path of your trip. Having a plan for filling up, especially on those holiday road trips coming up, is a great way to maximize your gas usage.

Purchase a club membership

Costco, Sam’s Club and Walmart Plus all offer discounted gas exclusively to members. If you are already a member, we recommend you fill up your gas there. Usually the prices are less expensive. If you aren't a member, consult your most recent budget to see if it makes sense to become a member.

Buy gas at the right time of day

Pump when it’s cooler outside (typically mornings and evenings) when fuel is densest and longest-lasting. This is an old trick that many have used.

Use Your RGCU Reward Points

RGCU Debit and Credit Rewards offer 5x points when you purchase gas. These points can be redeemed for cash back, merchandise, gift cards, travel rewards, and more! Use your RGCU card at the pump and earn rewards. It’s that easy!
